Excavator Shipping Costs and Rates

One of the most common questions is how much does it cost to transport an excavator? The average cost depends on distance, size, and the type of trailer. Oversize excavator hauling rates are higher, while compact jobs often qualify for affordable shipping rates.

The main factors affecting the excavator moving cost include:

  • Equipment size, weight, and trailer choice
  • Distance of excavator transit and fuel rates
  • Permits for oversize excavator transportation
  • International paperwork for Mexico and Canada

We also provide an excavator cost calculator to help plan ahead. How to Transport an Excavator

Many people ask how to transport an excavator safely. The process begins with route planning, selecting the appropriate excavator transport trailer, and ensuring a balanced weight. Professional excavator hauling ensures that the excavator load is secure from start to finish.

For smaller machines, customers often ask how to transport a mini excavator or how to load it onto a trailer. Our drivers are trained in both. We also explain how to load an excavator onto a trailer for larger jobs, ensuring the equipment is properly tied down.

Whether it’s shipping an excavator across the country, using cargo transport excavator solutions for excavator shipping to Hawaii, or arranging a port-to-port excavator shipment, our team manages the logistics.

All Excavator and Manufacturer Types We Transport

We ship all models, from mini excavator projects to the largest excavator transport. The Caterpillar 6090 FS is the biggest excavator in the world, and while not every project requires such a massive machine, we know how to handle large excavators and oversize excavator moving with the right trailers.

We move units from all major brands and offer mini excavator services for smaller equipment.

  • Caterpillar, Komatsu, and John Deere
  • Volvo, Hitachi, and Doosan
  • JCB, Kobelco, and Hyundai

Our team has hauled construction excavators, compact machines, and even non-running excavators. From moving an excavator with wheels to a truck with an excavator on the back, we make sure each excavator load is secured according to mini excavator tie-down requirements and safety regulations.

Trailers Used for Excavator Transportation

Choosing the best trailer to ship your excavator is a key step in planning. For standard projects, a flatbed trailer for excavator hauling works well. Oversize jobs may need a lowboy trailer, while compact excavator moving can often fit on a step deck.

When handling non-running excavators, we often use a Landoll trailer for safe loading and transportation. Our excavator transport dolly is an affordable option for moving excavators with wheels. If you need a trailer for hauling mini excavators, we ensure that each job complies with all loading and securement requirements.

Liebherr Excavator loaded on a 7 axle RGN for transport.

Hauling a Liebherr Excavator

Louis DeThomas moved a Liebherr excavator measuring 37.5 ft long, 12 ft wide, and 10.8 ft high. The unit weighed 54,000 lb, though with a different boomstick it can reach 76,000 lb. He ran a 7-axle RGN, dropped the neck for a ground-level load, and set the machine in the well with the stick tucked and bucket down to balance the axle groups. At 12 ft wide the move needed permits for width and weight and routing around bridge limits. Each axle on this trailer is rated to 18,000 lb, and he kept margin no maxing out, because that’s how hubs overheat and bearings fail. Securement was four chains to the frame with separate restraint on the boom and bucket, swing lock set, edge guards in, and photos taken at pickup and delivery.

Shipping John Deere 350g LC excavator on a RGN trailer.

Shipping a John Deere 350G LC Excavator on an RGN Trailer

Marc Richards handled a John Deere 350G LC move on a multi-axle RGN. He dropped the neck for a ground-level load, confirmed the weight and width off the plate, and set the excavator with the stick tucked and bucket down to hit axle targets. Permits and “OVERSIZE LOAD” gear were in place. Securement was four rated chains to the frame with separate ties on the boom and bucket; swing lock engaged, and edge guards added. Both sites had firm access for detaching and rehooking. After a brief shakedown, he rechecked the binders and documented their condition with photos at both pickup and delivery.

Can you move a non-running excavator?

Yes. Carriers use winches, Landolls, or yard loaders. Expect extra time and a surcharge for special equipment.

Do I need oversize permits?

Usually yes if loaded width exceeds 8’6”, height 13’6” (varies by state), or gross weight >80,000 lb. Escorts and curfews may apply on certain routes and bridges.

Who handles loading and unloading?

If the machine runs, the operator drives it on/off. If not, arrange a loader or crane. Sites must be level, firm, and accessible for a long combo.

Is the load insured?

Carriers provide cargo insurance. Ask for a COI and know the deductible and claim steps. Photos at pickup and delivery help document condition.

How much does it cost to move an excavator?

Price depends on distance, weight, loaded height, trailer type (lowboy/RGN, step-deck, flatbed), permits/escorts, fuel, and loading help. Add-ons like winching or cranes raise the total.

Which trailers are used for excavators?

Lowboy/RGN for tall or heavy machines; step-deck for mid-size units; flatbed for small models and attachments; Landoll for roll-on/roll-off or non-running units; beam/dolly setups for extreme weights.

What info do you need for an accurate quote?

Make/model, running status, weight, L×W×H (with boom/bucket/attachments), pickup/delivery ZIPs, dates, site access, and loading method.

Can you pick up from a jobsite or residential address?

Often, yes. The driver needs room to turn, no low wires/trees, solid ground, and daytime access. If not, use a nearby yard.

How should I prepare the excavator?

Wash off dirt/debris, remove personal items, check for leaks, fold/secure the boom and stick, lower attachments, disconnect batteries if required, and confirm tire/track condition.

Can I track the shipment?

Yes, dispatch updates by phone/text/email; many carriers provide GPS pings or scheduled check-ins with ETAs.
